The Algarve´s west coast is a majestic sweep of coastline and hinterland considered to be one of the most precious pieces of Portugal’s patrimony. It stretches from Sagres(the starting point for the epic voyages of discovery by the Portuguese explorers 500 years ago) to the border of the Algarve at Odeceixe.
Declared a National Park in 1995, it is a place of wild rugged landscape where nature combines with history to create an often awe-inspiring environment. Long sandy beaches are framed by surrealistic rock and cliff formations that seem to stretch to the horizon.
The 75,000 hectares Natural Park is a paradise for naturalists and ornithologists. It is a habitat for rare sea and land birds as well as no fewer than 750 species of wild flower, 12 of which are unique. The Park is also home to animals such as the fox, badger, civet cat, wild boar as well as exotic reptiles such as the Oscellated Green Lizard and the curious chameleon.
The Park´s untouched beauty and cultural traditions make it a wonderful haven for tourists and residents who like to explore off the beaten track and savour the culinary delights and wines in the region´s local taverns and restaurants.
